History, Science and geography have some unbelievable facts that are pretty hard to accept but it is actually the truth. There are many weird facts that don’t seem like facts at all but are still true. Would you ever think that a cashew in their original form are actually poisonous? And that they grow on the cashew apple a fruit which bears them?

1. The Birthday Paradox: In a group of 23 people, there are 50% chances someone shares the same birthdate as you.

In a group of 23 people, there is a 50% chance that someone has the same birthday as yours. This belief relies on the principle of permutation and combination known as “Birthday problem”. In a year, every day there is an equal probability of births every single day, except for 29th February, which shares a 50% probability of being born on the same day with somebody else.

There is a 99% probability to find a person sharing the same birth date as you in a group of 70 people. So on your birthday, you should also have a gift for just in case.

2. South Korea’s GDP in relation to Samsung

In the year 2018, South Korea’s GDP was calculated to a total of $1082 billion out of which 17% was Samsung’s revenue. For a long time, such a number has never been achieved until that year. A fifth of the total exports of the countries are also associated with it.

3. A crook almost sold the Eiffel tower twice

It is very hard to believe that one of the Seven Wonders of the World was bid off by a bunch of dealers. This crime was committed twice and was conveyed by Count Victor Lustig.

Victor had read an article in the newspaper about how much capital is being spent for the maintenance of the tower and that the tower was rusting. To reduce costs, many people demanded that the Eiffel tower should be taken down. So victor found an opportunity to sell the tower off and earn some money, so he found interested dealers and gave them tours of the tower.

The tower was sold at $20,000 along with a $50,000 bribe for a higher chance of getting the tower. After it was paid, Victor escaped from Paris and returned a few years later to again commit the crime, but this time he got caught.

4. Heroin was once regarded as a medicine

At the end of the 18th century, Heroin was a useful remedy for cold and cough.  The pharmaceutical company named Bayer used heroin as its ingredients for making medicines or children. In 1924 Heroin was banned as an ingredient for medicines. Here is a sample of their advertisement.

5. Digging more than 0.5% into earth’s radius is impossible

The earth’s crust is around 35 km thick. The earth’s radius is approximately 6500 km. beneath the crust, layers of rocks which are extremely hot and hard are present at extremely high temperatures which make digging towards the core impossible. At present, the maximum that has been dug down to is only 35 km, which is a total of 0.5 % only.

6. Coconuts kill more people than sharks every year

It is surprising to know that the probability of dying from a coconut landing on our head is 25 times more than getting eaten by a shark. In a year around 5 people are killed by a shark while 150 people die from coconuts. In Australia, people have more fear of dying from a coconut falling on their heads, that they have started removing coconut trees from the shore in places like Queensland, etc.

7.  Clouds actually have weight

A cloud weighs 1.1 million pounds in its whole lifespan, which is a lot. Although the density of water in a   cloud is less but since clouds are huge, collectively they can be pretty heavy. No one could even think that a cloud could be so heavy.

8. A gorilla named Koko was an expert in sign language

A western lowland gorilla named Koko was born in the 1970’s. She started learning American Sign Language for apes when she was just a year old. She loved to paint and had a kitten as a pet. She started expressing words like cry, frown and sad when her pet had passed away. She expressed her emotions like us and communicated similarly like a human being. At the start of the year 2018, she had passed away,

9. The northern, eastern and western most state in the US is Alaska

Alaska lies 180 degrees of longitude with its edge present in the western hemisphere and also moving towards the Eastern hemisphere. Most of the northern states in the US come under Alaska. But Hawaii is excluded. Hawaii is the most southern state of the US.

10. Honey has no expiration date

Honey can be good for consumption as it has the perfect chemical composition thus giving it a long lifespan. No organism can live in honey because of its chemical structure. It doesn’t matter how old honey is even if it’s a 1000 year old, it is still edible.

11. You can go to the moon using your DNA

Every human being has a DNA structure which is like a spiral coiled thread inside the nucleus. Our body contains 10 trillion cells which expand up to 744 million miles. Our DNA strands can stretch to the moon and come back 1500 times as the moon it is only 0.25 million miles away.
